Taser: Dance Instructor
Wisconsin State Journal
2/12/2010

(From Madison.Com)

A Baraboo (Wisconsin) man is accused of repeatedly shocking a male dance instructor with a stun gun, claiming the instructor was a sinner who defiles married women.

A Dane County prosecutor says 59-year-old Kevin Johnson of Baraboo hastily arranged a dance lesson at the instructor's Madison home and showed up with a stun gun and sledgehammer last Friday.

A criminal complaint says Johnson told a detective that his church does not condone touching while dancing and that he was going to scare the instructor and tell him to leave the women alone.

The Wisconsin State Journal says the instructor told police that Johnson phoned for private dance lessons, and when he opened the door to his home, Johnson began to shock him repeatedly in the neck with the stun gun.

(Note: Baraboo is about an hour away from Madison)

Familiar Faces, New Voices And A Talent For
Mike Strong

Walking into a Wylliams/Henry rehearsal in studio 108 this summer it was a pleasure to see a familiar face, former Kansas City Ballet dancer Christopher Barksdale. Chris, who retired from KCB after this last spring season (2009) may be moving into "old" country for a ballet dancer (at age 36) but he is still a performer and is working at an expanded set of performances from dance to theater.

Here he was rehearsing for Trap Door Party by 21-year old Josh Beamish from Vancouver whose dance reputation is rapidly expanding. His 4-year old company will be in traveling across Europe and Asia next year.

Young and "old" working together. The dancers themselves range in age from Josh's age to beyond Chris's age (21 to early 40's). Trap Door Party is an intricate and complex work, alternating between slow and high energy movements. This is a special edition modified from the original length of more than an hour to around 20 minutes.

This is also a new age in publicity. Wylliams-Henry artistic director Mary Pat Henry saw a 7.5 minute excerpt of the work on YouTube. When she phoned Josh to inquire about a performance he told her it would be more than an hour. Mary Pat said they never did individual pieces that long, could he cut it to a 20 minute version. He could.

And so, 2009 UMKC graduates Molly Vaeth and Chloe Abel joined with UMKC senior Gavin Stewart, and with veteran dancers DeeAnna Hiett, Christopher Barksdale, Tracy Ray Kofford, Tracey Franklin, Cynthia Mowrey and Torens Johnson.

Frankie Manning - Gone - Age 94
4/28/2009

Frankie Manning 2003 KC workshop (Louis and Co - Frankie, Laura, Louis)

Frankie Manning is dead (Sunday 26 April 2009). One of our most precious national, and world treasures. One of the originators of much which is Lindy Hop and from there most of swing as we know it. He and Freida Washington invented the first Lindy aerial (over the back) for a dance contest. Frankie was one of the original Whiteys Lindy Hoppers. He was in Kansas City for a workshop just six years ago put on by Louis and Company. At that time he was a mere 89.

Here are the two lead graphs from the New York Daily News and a link to the full article. There is also a link to the original KC workshop page from 2003.

BY David Hinckley - DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
Updated Monday, April 27th 2009, 4:09 PM

Frankie Manning, who pioneered the Lindy Hop in the 1930s, won a Tony a half-century later and inspired swing dancers around the world, died yesterday at Lenox Hill Hospital from complications of pneumonia.

But he didn't take the dancing with him. More than 2,000 swing dancers from 30 countries will come to New York May 21-25 to participate in "FrankieFest 95," which was originally planned to mark his 95th birthday on May 26
