Fractals are rough or fragmented geometric shapes that can be split into parts, each of which is a reduced-size copy of the whole. While fractals are a mathematical construct, their patterns are found in nature. Clouds, snowflakes, river networks, fault lines, systems of blood vessels, and ocean waves display self-similar structure over an extended period of time. The minimalist, repetitive music of Steve Reich works well with the fractal theme and has inspired the manipulation of patterns and shapes in this work. This piece is dedicated to my friend and mentor, Kathleen Kingsley, and to the dancers who have contributed their creative voice to this process.
