Visit: New disco music with varied mix including rock.easy toswing, rock, cha-cha to. The floor is dark hardwood which has been there for some years getting considerable use. It shows on the surface which is alright but not in top form - not as slick as a good ballroom floor.
The floor is in the back half of the nightspot and in a sunken well area of irregular shape but you could say it is about 15x35 feet in size with a pole in the middle. There are a couple banks of televisions on the walls and standard effects from lighting and smoke generators. The crowd is solidly 20's.

Visit: Super place! Very danceable music. Obviously a popular place. A full house. Good dancing crowd - they actually get up and dance for everything. This is a working crowd, casual dress, a parking lot full of cars, pickups and a few Harleys. They play hard.
We had a good time dancing. The dance floor is big enough to mean business and a lot of couples get on it but is not too crowded to move freely. The building is divided by a wall into two sections, a restaurant in the west half and a lounge in the east half. And no small matter - they have a full restaurant menu available until closing and served in either section of the building.

From Kansas City, take 169 north to Smithville, right past the second stop light on the left. The first stop light is a few miles from the city limit sign and the second stop light is a few miles past that, right south of the bridge across the Platte River.
Have faith and keep on going. Arizona's is across the bridge on the west. It is both a restaurant and a lounge. There is a full menu until the restaurant closes at 10pm.The lounge remains open. It has pool tables, seating tables, bar, spacious dance area and plenty of room for the band.
Visit: Friendly crowd, most are from the Smithville area. They didn't do a whole lot of dancing the night we were there, mostly freestyle but the area in which to dance is pretty good sized for a lounge. We had a good time here. The folks are social and the music is good.

Note: below street level on the Westport Road Side. Either inside in a long strip or outside on a back patio (depending on weather). 415 Westport Road
Visit: Not much in the way of dance areas but a lot of fun withgood music, rock on the patio and blues inside. Since most of the patrons (30's to 50's) were not dancing there was room to dance for us. Actually we didn't see anyone else dancing.
On the patio you may need to find your own area, on the patio in front of the band (brick floor) or back behind (rough wood steps leading out of patio pit) or on a rough cement walkway to the patio and behind the patio fence (Danced in sneakers). Inside there is a small smooth area of floor between the band and the first tables (could fit two, maybe three couples) or boogie in the rear in the open area which is part of the corridor.
 Blue Room, The Usage: venue
Music: jazz, blues Floor: vinyl, portion of regular floor Crowd: upper middle, musicians Looks: classy, neat like a museum CategoryPage(s): jazz, blues Age Policy: 21 To Drink Ages: ...To drink=21 URL.1: home.htm
Note: This is a part of the Kansas City Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. No smoking, Wet Bar. No Cover. Wander around the next-door museum rooms. Part of the historic 18th and Vine jazz district.
Visit: Smart, smoothly warm and friendly atmosphere. Fabulous music but not a lot of dancing. You might find a few persons who can W.C. but you might bring along your own partner, expect to W.C. swing and expect to be about the only ones dancing. Enjoy. The finest jazz and blues musicians in the city show up here to perform and to jam.
Because it is a museum the Blue Room is kept neat in a manner that makes you think of a museum exhibit, everything in place and no extra thingies strewn around. You can almost start thinking the entire crowd is an exhibit.

URL.2: bottleneck.htm
Note: West side of street in storefront, just south of and across the street from the Borders Books store - downtown Lawrence, one block east of Massachusetts Street. Fairly spacious maybe 150 deep x 50 wide. The dance floor is a right triangular area of main floor in the rear half of the club (the opposite triangle is the stage. Booths and tables in the rear section.
Visit: The swing crowd (Sundays) is a late crowd. The doors open at 9 pm and the patrons begin to trickle in. This visit was during spring break so most of the crowd was somewhere else. Still, by 10 or 10:30 it was beginning to get into serious dancing. Most are dressed in 'period' going-out fashions. They are doing a mixture of moves from East Coast and Lindy and various other sources.
You should have a good time here. The music picks are superb, played from CD's. The only note I didn't like much was the floor. Old hardwood, but certainly not polished like a ballroom, and also pitted in various locations with damage to the flooring. The dancers, however, didn't seem to mind and their patterns were step, step patterns rather than floor-contact motions. In any case we are talking fun here.
 Brass Ring Usage: venue
Days: Fri: Ladies' night
Music: jazz, Latino (salsa, merengue) Floor: large floor and a stage added for performers CategoryPage(s): latin Age Policy: 21 Minimum 21 ToEnter 21 To Drink Ages: ...Minimum=21...To enter=21...To drink=21

Bull Pen Too Saloon Usage: venue
Music: jazz, DJ request Floor: vinyl, 20x12 Crowd: suburban, 30's - 60's Looks: clean, neat, suburban neiborhood lounge CategoryPage(s): jazz, rock Age Policy: 21 To Drink Ages: ...To drink=21
Note: Just west of Switzer on 47th. This is way back in a tiny corner strip mall in suburban Merriam. Road construction blocking I-35's Antioch exit makes it hard to get to. Get on Merriam lane from either (1) the 635 exit and head west or (2) the Johnson Drive exit and head north - to Antioch. At Antioch head north to 47th, then head west to Switzer and a little past to a strip mall at the top of a hill. Bull Pen Too is easy to spot and takes more than half the mall.
Visit: Haven't seen the DJ night yet. Was there on a Sunday when some nice young kids were playing jazz. They occupied the dance floor and played jazz with a good swing to it (thanks to the drummer) but which then suddenly changes. Reminds of 50's, 60's swing jazz with sudden excursions. It would leave any dancer stranded in mid-stride. I would definitely go for the DJ, or maybe the jukebox.
The place is very pleasant looking. Clean, neat, the usual assortment of pool tables and games. The upholstery is in good shape as are the other fixtures - looks fairly new and well kept. The dance floor is a vinyl and slightly raised with a wood railing aroaund it. Food is in the order of burgers, pizza slices, etc. Crowd is suburban neigborhood.

The remaining strip of space (mayber 8x15 in front) is the danceable area of floor.
The crowd seems mainly there for the music with a few people getting up and single-person dancing. We kept as small a pattern as possible to make room for the others. Davey's is a well-known music venue and watering hole. Check the groups playing.

The participants, most of whom are teenagers and from low-income families, practice one to five times per week and perform at festivals year-round throughout the county. There is an open enrollment policy; new young people join classes, which are organized by age and experience, all the time.
El Grupo puts on 3 major performances and some 45 other performances a year. The south half has a bar, social tables with seating, some booths, a few games and a couple of pool tables. 21 or over, 18 may enter with parent or guardian
Visit: Sometimes very danceable, sometimes not danceable, reallydepends on the artist(s) - stop by and get their concert calendar. Some of this is truly toe-tappin' and some is no-steppin'. I've watched the crowd start to tap their feet and then stop in mid-tap as the musicians decided to show folks what their instrument sounds like when they ring its neck.
There is some crowded dancing in front of the bandstand but more room in the back of the club in an open area of the tile floor. You can have a great time here, or, if you are looking purely for dancing you might - depending on above factors - feel as though you are wasting your time.
The decor is 'original' with years worth of posters and flyers for the club doing duty as wallpaper, 15-foot high ceilings, a long bar along the entering wall and neon portraits along a far wall on either side of a large video projection screen.

Saturday afternoons the jam session with Mama Ray and Rich Van Sant has great kickin' music which richly deserves good swing dancers. And durn it, the folks here don't seem to be dancers. Visit: Generally packed with folks, 20's to 50's, bulk are inthe younger half of the age range. Dance floor areas are definitely for street shoes. When outside you will be on a concrete patio area. This is down right tiring to dance on at first but the music is great. The inside floor, depending on the band is sometimes too packed to dance. When you can dance it is a smooth hardwood floor. Bon Ton Soul Accordian Band is usually the early-shift act playing great zydeco music. Later is generally a rock group or two.

Isle of Capri Casino Usage: venue
Music: classic rock Crowd: 30's and up CategoryPage(s): casino, concerts
Note: (Former Flamingo Casino) - Some of the best danceable rock music in the area. Classic acts brought to KC on a regular basis. The only pity is the lack of any kind of real dance area. If the music weren't so good they would be worth talking about for dancers. You'll just have to go for the music and make do for dance spaces.
Most of these are outdoor concerts and the only place to dance is on grass or on a patio area near the top of an embankment. On rain dates there is a wood floor inside behind the bar/lounge area or just expect to dance on carpet around the top of the gambling area.

Framed Chief's jerseys around the walls, and other sports bar trappings: team logos, pictures, emblems. Sectioned into a bar area with pools tables and an island bar, and two seating areas at different levels then a dancing and dart-band area. Nice club for dancing. Both EC and WC although we found West Coast swing worked better for most of the music.

This is one of the nicest dance floors in the entire area. The room itself is a beautiful space for ballroom dancing with its large clear space - no columns - almost pristine in appearance.

Saturday's they have live music for dancing and a little karaoke. The floor area is small (10x10) but quite nice. The corwd is late 20's to mid 40's. Visit: Dancing is in an area of patio-type deck-planking on the roof, between the large amount of table seating and the bandstand in the SW corner of the roof deck. I've been there before when there was almost no room to dance. Otherwise they pull the tables back a little farther for dancing room for several couples.
The deck planking is pretty uneven though and tilts slightly to the north so ease up on spin things and wear street shoes (you might want to think twice about spike heels as well). They also use the second floor for private parties or dancing (especially in inclement weather). This is mostly a yuppies-type 20's crowd but anyone can join in.
They have a couple of regular panhandlers on the street with sort of regular spots around there and some who also find their way into the club and who will approach you in the corridor up to the deck. They are not really a threat but you should say no - firmly.

The Kansas City Lindy Exchange (KCLX - URL: www.kclx.com) is being handled by local dancers within a few different groups. So, there is no formal organization 'running the show' but mainly just dedicated dancers working together. It is an enterprise self-funded through ticket sales and sponsorships. Hopes are always that it will break even or get away with a few hundred extra as seed money for the next event. Whether formally incorporated or not, exchanges are non-profit events.
Exchanges began around 5 or 6 years ago with a true 'exchange' of dancers between Chicago and San Francisco,

Visit: The dance area is uneven plank flooring and cramped with posts and gouged areas you can trip on. Where the floor is not gouged it is out and out slick from years of polishing from just the actions of peoples feet.
The Levee is a long-time and very popular watering hole. Mostly 20's-30's crowd. Few seem to know much about partner dancing. If it is partner dancing you want this is not it. But if you want to dance anyway, and enjoy a famed KC meeting place, visit and dance. Depending on the crowd there will be dancers.

The floor area between the west and center booths gets cleared of the tables there to open up the dance space which is a vinyl-tile floor over concrete. Dance space maybe 20x20. The floor was a bit catchy (or draggie). The band set up in the front window.

Visit: Neighborhood bar. Looks a bit unkempt (a bit doubtful)as you enter the basement but the warm and friendly folks won us over right away. Definitely earns the 'neighbor' in our description. Dance floor is about 15 x 20 or more (vinyl tile type), in the corner near the entrance in front of the band. Mostly C&W we were told. Have not visited during a band's performance. Mostly 30's - 50's crowd. Looks like a fun and warm-times type of place.
