This is the first Work-in-Progress showing of an excerpt from The Pocho Project, an evening-length performance to be presented in New York in 2020. (“Pocho” is a Spanish word often applied to assimilated Mexican-Americans and implying “cultural traitor.”) Drawing on Moreno’s experience as a third-generation Mexican-American, The Pocho Project reclaims “pocho” to examine how immigration, cultural gatekeeping, and assimilation are embedded in the ways we move, talk, and write. | |

Vini Pi Pre/Come Closer was commissioned by the Spencer Museum of Art and the Unexpected Caribbean Symposium. Developed in dialogue with the exhibit, The Ties that Bind Haiti, the United States, and the Art of Ulrick Jean-Pierre in Comparative Perspective, the ensemble developed this dance theatre work from a practice-based research process. The choreography reflects the postures, shapes, lines, and concepts from the paintings, African diaspora dance traditions, and complex cultural and historical connections through a contemporary lens. | |

About the University Dance Company | |
The University Dance Company is a pre-professional performance ensemble accepting members by audition only. Students rehearse approximately four hours a week per piece for three months prior to the performance. University Dance Company concerts feature choreography by faculty members and guest artists in modern, ballet, jazz, tap, flamenco, East Indian and other dance forms.

Mariana Oliveira, Originally from Brazil, Oliveira studied at the Royal Academy of Dance in London, and was a trainee dancer at the National Dance Company of Wales. At the age of 19 she was invited to perform with the Cuban Classical Ballet of Miami. In 2009 she founded The Union Project Dance Company. |
