Devon Carney
New Artistic Director
Kansas City Ballet
Devon Carney is the associate artistic director of the Cincinnati Ballet. He was ballet master in Cincinnati from 2003 and associate director from 2008 (with artistic director / CEO Victoria Morgan). He has been principal dancer and (from 1998 to 2003) ballet master with Boston Ballet. He joined the Boston Ballet in 1978 from the New Orleans Ballet, the city of his birth. He has been teacher, competition judge and guest artist nationally and internationally. His career as a dancer spans 21 years. William Whitener, the outgoing KCB artistic director knows Carney from Carney's time as a performer with the Boston Ballet.
Two of Kansas City Ballet dancers worked with Carney in Cincinnati before coming to Kansas City, Anthony Krutzkamp
and Jill Marlow. They came to KCB in 2011. (KCB dancers bio link)
In Cincinatti Carney created a second company (CB II) with younger professional dancers. KCB would like to create something similar here as part of their strategic planning.
Carney came to KC as a finalist just this month (early May) as soon as the season closed in Cincinnati. He had been approached by an executive search firm last year. An initial pool of 62 was winnowed down to seven finalists. Each finalist spent three or four days in KC meeting all administration departments, teaching classes, coaching dancers, being part of public functions and meeting with the search committee.
Carney is married (32 years) to Pamela Royal Carney. Pamela Carney is a former soloist with Boston Ballet and is a faculty member of the Cincinnati Ballet Academy. They have two grown children, Lauren, an artist and Ryan, a musician. Devon and Pamela will relocate to Kansas City where Devon formally starts work July 1.
