Visit: New disco music with varied mix including rock.easy toswing, rock, cha-cha to. The floor is dark hardwood which has been there for some years getting considerable use. It shows on the surface which is alright but not in top form - not as slick as a good ballroom floor.

The floor is in the back half of the nightspot and in a sunken well area of irregular shape but you could say it is about 15x35 feet in size with a pole in the middle. There are a couple banks of televisions on the walls and standard effects from lighting and smoke generators. The crowd is solidly 20's.

Antoinette's
Usage: venue

Days:
Sun: 7:30pm-11pm

Music: Mix, country/rock, danceable no cover FriSat: 9:30pm-2:30am

Ages: ...To drink=21

Note: Sun 7:30-11 dance floor, wood, no cover, 4545 N Brighton, from I-35, take the Brighton exit (west of I-435 and Worlds of Fun) south about 0.4 miles to 46th Street. Antoinette's is on the east side of the road. Lounge and restaurant open until 3am. Serve full menu in both restaurant and lounge.

Visit: Super place! Very danceable music. Obviously a popular place. A full house. Good dancing crowd - they actually get up and dance for everything. This is a working crowd, casual dress, a parking lot full of cars, pickups and a few Harleys. They play hard.

We had a good time dancing. The dance floor is big enough to mean business and a lot of couples get on it but is not too crowded to move freely. The building is divided by a wall into two sections, a restaurant in the west half and a lounge in the east half. And no small matter - they have a full restaurant menu available until closing and served in either section of the building.

Blayney's
Usage: venue

Music: rock, blues 9pm-1am+

Ages: ...Minimum=21...To enter=21...To drink=21
URL.1: blayneys.htm

Note: below street level on the Westport Road Side. Either inside in a long strip or outside on a back patio (depending on weather). 415 Westport Road

Visit: Not much in the way of dance areas but a lot of fun withgood music, rock on the patio and blues inside. Since most of the patrons (30's to 50's) were not dancing there was room to dance for us. Actually we didn't see anyone else dancing.
On the patio you may need to find your own area, on the patio in front of the band (brick floor) or back behind (rough wood steps leading out of patio pit) or on a rough cement walkway to the patio and behind the patio fence (Danced in sneakers). Inside there is a small smooth area of floor between the band and the first tables (could fit two, maybe three couples) or boogie in the rear in the open area which is part of the corridor.

Blue Room, The

Music: jazz, blues
Floor: vinyl, portion of regular floor
Crowd: upper middle, musicians
Looks: classy, neat like a museum
CategoryPage(s): jazz,blues

URL.1: home.htm

Note: This is a part of the Kansas City Jazz Museum and the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. No smoking, Wet Bar. No Cover. Wander around the next-door museum rooms. Part of the historic 18th and Vine jazz district.

Visit: Smart, smoothly warm and friendly atmosphere. Fabulous music but not a lot of dancing. You might find a few persons who can W.C. but you might bring along your own partner, expect to W.C. swing and expect to be about the only ones dancing. Enjoy. The finest jazz and blues musicians in the city show up here to perform and to jam.
Because it is a museum the Blue Room is kept neat in a manner that makes you think of a museum exhibit, everything in place and no extra thingies strewn around. You can almost start thinking the entire crowd is an exhibit.

Visit: Davey's is divided into two main rooms. You enter througha bar and dance in a the second room on the north side. The entire second room has hardwood flooring in good shape. The room is about 20x40 feet with a band platform at the street end and table seating in the opposite half of the room. They recently added a bar area off the back side of this room. The remaining strip of space (mayber 8x15 in front) is the danceable area of floor.

The crowd seems mainly there for the music with a few people getting up and single-person dancing. We kept as small a pattern as possible to make room for the others. Davey's is a well-known music venue and watering hole. Check the groups playing.

Denim and Diamonds

AGE: 21+, 16-20 with parent or guardian. D&D used to be one of the really nice spots for teens and whole families to go, especially on Sundays. The owner is very strongly commited to places for youth to go. Unfortunately, and much to their disgust, North KC refused to allow them any teen nights or family hours.

Visit: Nice dance floor, large to medium and rectangular, maybe 30 feet by 50 feet. Good dance shoes are just fine (or boots). Sometimes too much powder on the floor making it too slick in places but not for long. Lots of dance partners. Very active place with a lot of clientel. Good mix of music and when the line dancing is on you can find room in the corners or sides to swing with a partner.

Visit: There is plenty of room here (which is not obvious from the outside) No one was dancing but there were few persons here on a Friday night. Just music from the DJ stand and guys playing pool.

The dance-floor area is actually an area in which it looks as though the vinyl floor tile was removed down to the concrete to make outline a dance area.

Floor: ceramic-tile /Bsidewalk/b
Crowd: anybody walking by
Looks: casual, lobby area
CategoryPage(s): concerts,casino

Note: They don't have dancing but the list of groups they hire regularly for Friday and Saturday evenings are blues, zydeco and classic rock type of bands that are being danced to elsewhere in the area. The band sets up on a stand behind the sports bar and grill in the center of the lobby.

This is in front of the main ticket windows. The 'sidewalk' floor in front of the band area can be used for dancing. Basically it is a matter of showing up on the sidewalk (interior sidewalk) in front of your favorite band and dancing on the ceramic tiles.

Isle of Capri Casino
Usage: venue

Music: classic rock
Crowd: 30's and up
CategoryPage(s): casino,concerts

Note: (Former Flamingo Casino) - Some of the best danceable rock music in the area. Classic acts brought to KC on a regular basis. The only pity is the lack of any kind of real dance area. If the music weren't so good they would be worth talking about for dancers. You'll just have to go for the music and make do for dance spaces.
Most of these are outdoor concerts and the only place to dance is on grass or on a patio area near the top of an embankment. On rain dates there is a wood floor inside behind the bar/lounge area or just expect to dance on carpet around the top of the gambling area.

Jersey's Sports Cafe
Usage: venue

Music: rock, classic and danceable (works for swing)
Floor: hardwod about 12x15, mirror on wall nice
Crowd: 20-50's
Looks: sports bar, casual dress
CategoryPage(s): rock,swing
URL.1: jerseys.htm

Note: On 24 Hwy about 0.6 miles east of 291 up front in the Susquehanna Shopping Center. Fri-Sat 9pm-1am.

Visit: Band sets up in the dart area adjacent to and slightly above the dancefloor. Neighborhood crowd mixing 20's to 50's+. They do get on the floor and move around here. Framed Chief's jerseys around the walls, and other sports bar trappings: team logos, pictures, emblems. Sectioned into a bar area with pools tables and an island bar, and two seating areas at different levels then a dancing and dart-band area. Nice club for dancing. Both EC and WC although we found West Coast swing worked better for most of the music.

John Knox Village Pavilion
Usage: venue

Music: ballroom,swing,oldies,Latin
Floor: hardwood 50x50 - one of the finest in the area
Crowd: older, largely retired
Looks: very nice, modern, airy
CategoryPage(s): ballroom,swing
URL.1: JohnKnoxPavillion.asp

Note: John Knox Village is a non-denominational, not-for-profit retirement community. They usually have one dance a month in the pavilion. It is an open dance with a band.

Visit: The Pavilion is a large, pyramid-shaped event hall - a single large room with a big stage and a 50x50 foot (or so) hardwood dance floor - very nice floor. This is one of the nicest dance floors in the entire area. The room itself is a beautiful space for ballroom dancing with its large clear space - no columns - almost pristine in appearance.

Johnny O'Quigley's
Usage: venue

Music: Retro
Crowd: lates 20's to mid 40's
Looks: casual, upper middle
CategoryPage(s): rock

Note: Highway 45 (64th street) exit. On the south side of the road, take a turn south on N. Chatam road (at the Texaco) and make a right turn behind the Texaco and Blockbuster's and go to the end of the lot (careful, lots of road traffic and traffice into and out of the Hen House grocery). Saturday's they have live music for dancing and a little karaoke. The floor area is small (10x10) but quite nice. The corwd is late 20's to mid 40's. If you know how to partner dance the floor is pretty much yours.

La Fonda El Taquito
Usage: venue

Music: Ranchera, Salsa, Tejano, Merengue
CategoryPage(s): Latin
URL.1: lafonda_eltaquito.htm

Note: Carry out and private parties. Live entertainment on weekends. Friday dance music. Saturday Salsa. Medina Family Proprietors

Levee, The
Usage: venue

Music: rock, Mon/Tue, Thur-Sat 5pm-8, 9-1am
Floor: rough-plank flooring
Crowd: 20 - 40+
Looks: rough hewn
CategoryPage(s): jazz,blues
Dine&Dance: separate restaurant area and food served in bar/dance area
URL.1: levee.htm

Visit: The dance area is uneven plank flooring and cramped with posts and gouged areas you can trip on. Where the floor is not gouged it is out and out slick from years of polishing from just the actions of peoples feet.
The Levee is a long-time and very popular watering hole. Mostly 20's-30's crowd. Few seem to know much about partner dancing. If it is partner dancing you want this is not it. But if you want to dance anyway, and enjoy a famed KC meeting place, visit and dance. Depending on the crowd there will be dancers.

Lucky Brewgrille

Sat: Entertainment

Music: rock,swing,house,dance
CategoryPage(s): nightclub
Dine&Dance: Full Menu and space to dance

EML.1: greg@luckybrewgrille.com

Note: a lot of fun and always a lot of people. 20's-30's mainly. Larger than it looks with and upstairs and a downstairs and entertainment on both levels.

Visit: There are two dance areas, upstairs and downstairs. The upstairs front is part of the north side of the strip mall along Johnson Drive. The room is about 80 x 60 feet or so with the front divided by a line of booths and ending at the south in a bar. The floor area between the west and center booths gets cleared of the tables there to open up the dance space which is a vinyl-tile floor over concrete. Dance space maybe 20x20. The floor was a bit catchy (or draggie). The band set up in the front window.

Marcy's Restaurant and Lounge
Usage: venue

Music: country (5 nights) Wed-Sun 9pm-2am
Floor: vinyl tile 15x20
Crowd: 30's+
Looks: friendly unclassy
CategoryPage(s): country,rock,swing

Note: basement, under the restaurant, at the S.E. corner of Antioch and Vivion (out front of K-Mart and next to Parts America [former Western Auto] ). Restaurant and lounge number: 816.452.0103.

Visit: Neighborhood bar. Looks a bit unkempt (a bit doubtful)as you enter the basement but the warm and friendly folks won us over right away. Definitely earns the 'neighbor' in our description. Dance floor is about 15 x 20 or more (vinyl tile type), in the corner near the entrance in front of the band. Mostly C&W we were told. Have not visited during a band's performance. Mostly 30's - 50's crowd. Looks like a fun and warm-times type of place.

Visit: The dance floor is fairly easy to dance on. We found that we had the floor pretty much to ourselves and the blues band (Mamma Ray) played music for us.

Rainbow Center
Usage: venue

Music: Spanish, Salsa, Merenge, Mexican, general mix
Floor: Smoothed concrete slab (main building floor)
Crowd: 20's, 30's Latino (helps to speak Spanish)
Looks: Like an aircraft hanger with tables and chairs
CategoryPage(s): Latin

Note: You are into highway engineer revenge-on-lost-persons territory. From Kansas City take Kansas Ave straight west to just over the Turner bridge across the Kansas River. Take the short right turn at the end of that bridge onto 59th st. lane (turns back under the end of the bridge and goes south). Stay south on 59th St. Lane until it turns rightward (west) and becomes Kansas Ave. again. 62cnd St and Rainbow Center are only a couple of blocks past this turn. Look to the north (right) side of the road.
Cover varies widely depending on the band, could be $25-$30 dollars or even $3 to $10.

Visit: This is a BIG room. Capacity is 960 persons. Some 15 or 16 rows of tables are set down each side of the room with seven to eight chairs per table (450 give or take). The dance area is in the middle aisle of about 35x100+ feet and the band stage is across the far end of the room. The building is not high, maybe 12 to 15 feet but the ceiling has metal spanning the distance between walls.
Food is catered. The Rainbow Center is also available for rental for special events. It is run by Paulo and Frank Ramirez who operate La Unica (618 Kansas Ave, 371-1700) which sells CD's, Cassettes, Stereos, amplifiers, fancy boots and sombreros among other items.

Floor: wood parquet about 12x12 clean, not slick
Crowd: 30's-50's
Looks: informal (very)
CategoryPage(s): rock

Note: band most Fri/Sat nights until 1am. 6720 Kaw Dr (K-32 in KC, KS)

Visit: Floor is maybe 12x12 or a little more, not in the bestshape as far as finish and polish go but they make an effort to keep it clean (while we were there someone spilled drinks and they were right there to clean the floor). Had a good time dancing to a live band (almost, we came in at the tail end of their gig), another old-guys-with-day-jobs band - one of my favorite kinds.

Their technique may not have been without mistakes but their drummer kept a beat to dance by. The decor is a bit rough hewn. This is not a formal place. Jeans, cut-offs, t-shirts etc. and a light sprinkling of some Harley gear.

Here life has feeling, flavor, intensity. This is a can't-miss evening. Zaīna Alī, the belly dancer puts on a marvelous show. Tasso Kalliris is more host and patriarch of a grand family party than a mere MC of a show. You will feel the richness of family and community even though you may never before have seen any of the other diners.
For a ballroom dancer the dance area of the floor is not what you might like. It is a bit sticky. But the atmosphere is so great you can easily forgive that. Remember, this is SOCIAL dancing. (NOTE: Zaīna both performs and teaches belly dancing. call 816-941-2131)
